Hi,
In my Canon 5D and quite a few others, you have an option to auto bracket.This means taking 3 shots of a subject in quick succession at different exposures.For example the shot above was taken at -2 0 2+ exposure .Then the 3 shots were merged in Photomatix a software that is ideally suited for this process.There are sliders that you can tweak to make the image photo realistic or a bit more "artsy"(over cooked) like mine.

Appreciate the advice... even my fixed lens Fuji can auto-bracket, but I didn't know one could merge the resulting pics as you describe.
